Learning that the Pacific Ocean garbage patch is now as big as the state of Texas had a profound impact on me. In my own life I plan to limit the purchase and use of plastic bottles and jars in any way I can. I already recycle glass jars to use in food and pantry storage of dry goods. This will take a massive global effort to clean up this waste and try to restore ruined beaches. Along the USA west coast massive piles of plastic from the 2011 Japan tsunami are already washing ashore. Local governments have little or no money in their budgets to try to begin to cope with the costs of a clean up. This issue will become a national environmental disaster on a scale not seen in human history within another year.
