Adele returns this week with a new album titled 25.
Her third studio effort arrives five years after her massive sophomore set 21 which has sold over 30 million records world-wide.
On October 21st Adele took to Twitter to address her fans, and announce her return to music. “I’m sorry it took so long, but you know, life happened,” she wrote.
“My last record was a break up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make up record. I’m making up with myself. making up for lost time. making up for everything I ever did and never did.”
The first single from 25 is “Hello” which debuted in the form of a cinematic video directed by Canadian actor/director Xavier Dolan.
The six minute mini-movie was shot in the countryside surrounding Montreal and co-stars Mack Wilds, known for his roles as on HBO’s The Wire and the CW’s 90210.
“It was a privilege to direct the music video for Adele’s beautiful, heartbreaking song” said Dolan in a prepared statement. “When I first heard it, all the images were already running by so clearly in my head – and her trust and generosity allowed me to create freely.”
Adele then shared a second single, “When We Were Young.” The video of her performance was recorded at The Church Studios in London, where some of 25 was recorded.
Fans are certainly excited for Adele’s return, according to Billboard “Hello” is the first song ever to sell at least 1 million downloads in one week. But when Adele spoke to with Carson Daly on AMP 97.1 in Los Angeles she confessed that she considered retiring from music all together. It was her son Angelo who inspired her to return.
“For awhile I was like, maybe I shouldn’t come back,” she admitted. “Maybe I should go out on a high. Maybe everyone likes what they’ve heard of me. And then I realized I want my kid to know what I do. He’s really inspired me.”
